Accessibility Testing Results
The application is not really screen reader accessible despite the good keyboard controls and shortcut keys. The program is not very intuitive although easy to use once one has learnt the various controls and it offers many different file formats. The contrast levels are poor and buttons very small. But it is free and does not take up much space - download 279KB
| # | Test | Score | Summary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | Built in accessibility checks | ![]() |
Magnifier and Screen keyboard work well and the application responds to stick keys and High contrast mode. However, the Narrator screen reader can only be used with the main menus. |
| 17 | Application works with External Assistive Technologies | ![]() |
Some actions do not respond by using keyboard and the NVDA screen reader cannot read everything. |
| 18 | Text or other alternatives for image elements. | ![]() |
Menus with icons are read out correctly, but graphics are not used for other files. |
| 19 | Keyboard / Alternative input with focus | ![]() |
The program is not fully accessible with keyboard only access and is therefore also inaccessible to screen reader users. |
| 20 | Labels for objects, fields or controls | ![]() |
It appears that there is limited use of labels to help screen reader users although there are keyboard shortcuts and titles to buttons NVDA could not read the text. |
| 21 | Audio alerts have visual cues | ![]() |
The program supports alternative for audio alert in the form of sound sentries. |
| 22 | Alternatives for Video / Animation | ![]() |
The program only plays videos or animations already developed and is not designed to allow for text alternatives. |
| 23 | Media events offer user control | ![]() |
The interface is not clear, so controls are difficult to immediately recognise. Text titles do help but only appear when the mouse hovers over the buttons. |
| 24 | Textual Information for screen reader | ![]() |
Textual information is provided for menus but it is not accessible to NVDA screen reader users. |
| 25 | Keyboard shortcut keys offered | ![]() |
Keyboard shotcuts are offered and work well to control the media events. |
| 26 | Save user preferences for style and zoom | ![]() |
There is no specific way to change font sizes. zoom just changes the size of window. The program offers new skins but not for accessibility purposes. The system changes do not work with the main look and feel of the player but do change the look of dialog windows. |
| 27 | Timed events can be altered | ![]() |
Not applicable. |
| 28 | Change colours and contrast | ![]() |
Colours are not changed by making colour changes using the built in system although dialog boxes do change. It is possible to re-skin the application but this does not help accessibility. Black is used throughout with poorly contrasting text. |
| 29 | Uniform and standardised presentation | ![]() |
The program does not offer consistency of navigation with any well known operating systems and menus are not clear. |
| 30 | Documentation | ![]() |
The application itself does not have any offline help files. F1 or use of a button in the top left hand corner goes straight to online files including a manual. It is not intuitive. |
